Likewise, I feel that with morning work, the chidlren stay busy and quiet. I actually begin each day with up to 30 mins. of seatwork. Boring? Doesn't have to be. I have classical music playing when the children arrive. They look at my big dry erase board for their "M&M's" or morning musts. I usually have three: 1) Quietly unpack, turn in your homework, and sharpen pencils. 2) Complete the Daily Oral Language and math problems. and 3) Journal 5+ sentences about... (I give a fun prompt each morning and increase the sentence # throughout the year). Sometimes, I add work that needs to be finished or have a book for them to read.
I like having 30 mins. to do roll, lunch count and read notes. Good luck!
