michael, welcome to the club. Everyone loves to tell teachers to do all hands on activites, and then they expect kids to well onthe standardized tests which are certainly not hands on. it is very difficult to have actual number grades. I don't know about you, but our system still uses the traditional report cards, which involve putting a letter grade. With that kind of sytem, we still need more traditional assessment. All I can tell you is that for every experiment, I assign an activity sheet, where they can record and answer questions. Each component they complete has points and will count for a grade. I make up questions for them to answer as homework relating to the activity. And I make up traditional tests that require them to provide open response answers. Its a lot of work. Good luck.
