Having been an aid for 6 years before my first teaching job this year I have a few comments. I understand that not all aids are good. In fact many have had absolutely no training. They are told to go into the classroom and help with whatever. You may want to sit down with the aid one on one and tell her exactly what you want her to do. Tell her at 10:00AM you need to take Johnny and Billy out in the hall to do reading. At 10:30 you will be working with 4 kids on math. I think sometimes teachers don't know what to do with aids and are afraid for some reason to work out a schedule with them. Remember you are the teacher the adult in charge of your classroom. The aid should be there to work with students, not grade papers, put up boards, or do your busy work, or discipline students. At my school we don't call them aids, they are instructional assistants, which means they help with students with academic work. Good luck.
