    That's an excellent question. it is one that the child's teacher should be able to answer for you. Have you heard of running records? This is a type of assessment that records a student's reading behaviors while reading text. The teacher keeps tracks of his/her substitutions, multiple attempts at a word, omissions, etc. If the child scores brloe 90%, the text is too hard, or frustration level. If he scores 90% - 94%, the text is just right, or referred to as instructional level. If the score is 95% or higher, the text is too easy. There's more to this assessment........but won't go into it. Just want you to know that there are assessment out there for you to determine the appropriate reading level for children.

    Running records, at first, is very intimidating to administer. But with a little practice, they get easier and or an invaluable assessment tool.

    Ask the teacher for advice. I am sure that he or she will be very happy that you ask!
