This drove me nuts, too. I finally decided not to allow sharpening during the day, period! They may sharpen using hand held sharpeners, they can use mechanical pencils (with the understanding that I will take that priviledge away if they play with them) and I have a sharing jar that I sharpen (about 30) every other day (takes less than 5 minutes and worth it!!). I remind them to return them at the end of the day. If a child is fiddling with their mechanical pencil or sharpener I just matter of factly tell them to go borrow one of mine, emphasis is always on borrow! good luck, the noise was so distracting and nothing else worked. I only allow sharpening of colored pencils when we are doing a drawing project!
