an idea that really works well for me

I hate the disruption of sharpening pencils during class it drives me nuts...so this is what I did...
I made a borrow jar for pencils...
I explained that the kids can only sharpen their pencils the first 20 minutes during morning routine..then...NO MORE...
if they need a pencil I filled a jar of them that they can borrow...
BUT..they have to give me one to take one..
I have a student who is in charge of sharpening them the last 5 minutes of the day...
    It really works...
I explained that if they take and dont give we will have NONE left...
some still do and the jar is empty once and I awhile..what I do is bring it to their attention..
I say that people must be borrowing without giving and then ask for donations to the jar...
I have NEVER gotten a kids to not donate...
they feel like they are giving and sharing and its great...
My borrow pencils are NOT cool..they are plain jane and ugly so they dont want to take one..
    anyway..
While I have baught about 100 pencils I have only lost about 20...for 3 months that is great...
I give them cool pencils for certain times so they are careful not to have to give those up but over all it works really well and builds classroom community...
I keep it on my supply table with extra crayons markers paper and all that...
I am proud to say all supplies are still there and in great shape...
It does take a great deal of exageration...
"Thank you for being responsible joey and returning my things..."
"Look someone left the cap off a marker what does that mean...not taking responsibilty..."
but those couple of minutes really really work!!
    good luck!!!
