multiplication facts
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach fifth grade. Our state standards (SC) call for children to have memorized all of the multiplication facts from 0-12 by the end of fourth grade. Most of the students I have do NOT know their facts instantly. I gave
a timed test (5 minutes) which I completed myself in 1 minute, and I checked the papers. There were students who had not completed the paper, even in 5 minutes. Whenever we do activities which require the use of multiplication, I see fingers moving.

I think it's a good idea for first and second grade teachers to get kids to learn the 2s, 5s, and 10s, since these are easy patterns

to learn.

I am hopeful that my students will know their facts more quickly as the year progresses, but you never know. I met a high school teacher a few days ago who says that HER students don't know their facts!
