    Multiplication Facts

I teach in a Catholic school. We have new standards from our diocese that require that by 4th grade the students have mastered all multiplication and division. It is not even suppose to be touched in 5th (where I teach). They are suppose to start them in 2nd, master the facts and start 1 digit in 3rd, and totally master everything in 4th. I have just spent the last 5 weeks teaching my 5th graders how to do multiplication. Some still didn't know their facts. Now, if they can't multiply by 5th grade, how am I suppose to get through all of my requirements for the standards. I'm suppose to introduce fractions and decimals and they have to master it by the end of the year. I also have to do measurement, geometry, and data analysis with mastery in all. I've already talked to many parents in this class who said their children have not even been introduced to this stuff. I don't have anyone to go back to because last years 4th grade teacher has left (thank God). Sorry!! I didn't mean to vent here but your question hit a sore spot with me. I wish you luck with your students in learning their facts. Take care.
