I agree with Carolyn. Let them know you think they are doing a great job! Compliment them on the positives every day, yet remain firm and consistent in your discipline plan. Make comments like, "This is a fantastic line. I'm sure all the teachers and classes we pass will appreciate our kindness." THEN find someone, ANYONE who will pay your class a compliment as you walk in the hall or as you come to special. Enlist the help of the special area teachers--let them know that you are pleased with the way so and so is behaving or working---eventually your positive nature will catch on to the others and they will refocus their comments. In the meantime, if you have a school newsletter or morning announcements or even a bulletin board in your hall or even on your door---compliment them. Write in the news letter--"Our class would like you to know that we have been working hard on________. Thanks for noticing our efforts!" Toot your own horn since your mentor won't. Good luck and stay positive--in the end you know you will have a great class!
