    Real Class

We are an elementary school. Our PE teachers are valued professionals in our building. We work together to solve discipline problems and related citizenship issues such as sportsmanship and teamwork. We consider PE a "real" class. It is not just a playtime. Our coaches teach the names and functions of muscles and bones. They even come into our classrooms to teach health topics. After teaching, they give assessments, score the tests, and return them to our kids for feedback. (No additional work for the classroom teacher is created.)

Sometimes it's a temptation to "take PE away" from a child for disciplinary purposes or motivation. However even if we wanted to, we would not be allowed to withhold PE (or music or art) from a child. I can't even imagine not valuing PE as a "real" class or appreciating our coaches as anything less than the professionals they are.
