well, obviously if they're bad at it they need more practice. We all write sentences each day. They will need to be able to do that also. Maybe your sentences for dictation are too difficult?

How are you grading the sentences? I'd grade one point for each word and one point for each necessary punctuation. For example:

I can't send that letter today. the points would be 6 points for words spelled correctly. 1 point for correct capitalization 1 for and end mark and 1 for an apost. for a total of 9 points.
