Something to try!
By Judy

Clip to ScrapBook
One thing that I have done in my 5th grade classes, since there seems to be no time in the day for it, is give out packets at the beginning of the week that are due later on in the week. I have put different operations problems,
place value topics, rounding, word problems, etc. into these packets. I usually limit the packet to 3-4 pages. This allows the students to practice on basic skills outside of class. Sometimes, if I know that some of the class is really strong in an area and some are stuggling, I will tell the kids that if they make a 90% or above on any section, they will not have to complete
that section the next week.

My class periods are short, and I have had to eliminate some things like my Problem of the Day. It doesn't make me happy, but I have learned how to divided the time into 3 basic parts and focus on three topics at a time. The kids seem to do well with it. I have a skills time where I review what I see they need from their packets and what will be coming up in their next packets. I have a problem solving time where we work on skills for reading and understanding word problems. AND...I have a time where we get into the curriculum that the school provides. It is based on mini-lessons with mixed review. Altogether, I think the time is used as well as it can be. I hope this helps.
