Regie Routman, teacher, author, educational speaker and consultant, has addressed this concept in detail in several of her books (Literacy at the Crossroads and Conversations--Heinemann Publisher). She is an expert in many areas of literacy and very common sense. Some of her books are long, but highly researched, great references and well worth every penny. I'm not sure if you have time to plan a detailed student-led conference, but you could certainly have the student sit in and express their strengths and areas that need improvement. I like the teamwork idea, but feel it does need to be structured. Good luck!
