excessive talking

I have 4th grade students. 28 of them. When they start talking all at once, it drives me crazy.

I use a Tally System. They are in groups of 6. Each table attempts to earn the most tallies at the end of the day inorder to get a star for their group.

It's great for making the transition from one lesson to the next. The only thing I say is "O.K. let's see which table is ready"
They immediately begin to shuffle about as a group ( assisting each other) to be the first table to prepare for the next lesson.

It works for peparing for lunch, going home.

I even use it when class participation is low.
