Rounding
By Michael

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi. I teach in a 4th grade classroom and use the following method to teach rounding. Let's say that I wanted the students to round to the nearest 10. If the number is 66, I have the students locate the 10's place and then find his/her immediate next door neighbor. I explain to the students that if the neighbor is 1-4 then you must round down. If it is 5-9 then they must round up.

Another way that I have found to illustrate this is to draw a bell curve (like the intelligence curve) and number it 1-9 with 5 in the middle. I liken it to a roller coaster. The kids seems to get it if I "illustrate" it.

Good luck

Michel
