I go around every morning while they are doing their morning warmup and they have out their log, library book, and math worksheet. They have a lot of documenting to do. They have a homework recording calendar to log whether they have their HW and I send this to the parents at the end of the month. If they don't have their reading they must miss morning recess and complete the work. If the work is not completed by then, they lose the afternoon recess as well (it is allowed by our principal.) Random days and kids are chosen for me to just pick up their writing and read it aloud. I just give them points for the writing based on that. They must have 10 entries per book for 100 points. By the end of the week, I have seen and have a good idea of what they've written and during morning check in I advise them about the quality of their work. I've got the check in down to about 20-25 minutes for 25 kids. Those that I don't get to because of tardies, come in a self report about completion. Anyone missing an assignment has to move their clothes pin down to the blue area. Two or more missing assignments get a note send to parents or a phone call, in addition to missing recess. I do have a few habitual slackers who'd rather gringe in guilty agony each morning, but I don't try to rehabiltate them, I just incarcerate them at recess, make them do the work and move on with my life. There are too many family variables working against some kids, and I don't try to swim against those strong currents.;)
