I know how you feel. By Carolyn

I know how you feel. I did long-term sub assignments several times before I started teaching full-time. It was a constant source of annoyance to me when kids would ask when their regular teacher would return. I had some| kids, even teachers, ask me, "When is Mrs. R coming back?" EVERY DAY! I felt extremely unwelcome and annoyed. I just ignored it, but it did cut into my feelings. I am a full-time fifth grade teacher now. I still put up with what you are saying. It doesn't seem to end. Now my kids say something like, "Could I transfer to Mrs. M's class?" I tell them that they can't, that they were | | assigned to my class. Then there are the two girls in my class who leave me and run to the other fifth grade teacher and give her a huge hug. They ask to sit with HER class at lunchtime. If it makes you feel any better, I have problems getting my students--some of them--to complete work. I make them stay in at recess time, which they hate, but I am firm about this. Then there are the kids who do what they want and ignore your directions and requests. It is read aloud time and I am sharing a book. I always have to remind certain kids that it's not time to play Tic-Tac-Toe, or something like that. I don't think the battles with kids ever ends. My feeling is that they don't get enough supervision or control at home. Some parents are overly indulgent when it comes to their kids, I think. Why else would they have temper tantrums when you ask them to do something that they should do without question? Just to let you know that this does happen to other people!
