    Intro, modeling, and assessment

    Start off with a little easy intro -

    Start time: Have the kids record the current time in their math journal

    Give them 3 minutes to walk around the room and talk to each other (or dance, or stretch with them, etc.)

    After everyone sits down, write down the current time: Try to figure out how long they were doing the activity. Ask them if they think minutes, hours, or days went by. How do you know?

    That way - you have a hands-on/active introduction.

    Next - have them make a little foldable book about when they do things in school. Keep it simple - down to the hour using the word "about". So page one, you could list the time you come to school (about 8:00) and have them draw a picture of them coming to school with a sentence "I arrive at school around ______ a.m.)

    Then have them write another event, like snack and list the time. Draw a picture, write a sentence, and then elapse the time."I eat snack at __________. It has been _____ hours since I arrived at school". So each page will have 2 sentences.

    Keep going as long as you like, and let them do it independently after a few pages. If they really get it, have them elapse all the times on every page. "It has been _______ hours since I arrived at school, ______ hours since snack, and __________ hours since lunch". Up to however your kids understand it.

    Meanwhile, if you have little clock manipulatives they can use and/or share, it would help them to turn the hands to see how much time has gone by. Or, if you have a big teacher clock you can use for the first few pages.

    Then, find a simple worksheet that would assess them on this so you have all 3 aspects of a perfect administrator-friendly lesson :)
