    Examples

Give students a prompt and read it together. Then post three or four examples of responses. You actually do not need the entire response, just a beginning will do. One of the examples should be off topic. Just label them A, B, C and D. Allow the students to walk around and read them. They will decide if they are on on topic or off.

Mine had to do this in fourth grade. We had them grade them using a 1, 2, 3 and 4 because that was how they were graded. It helped them to understand what was required to get a 4 or "A" and how that differed from a "1" or a failing grade.

We were able to get poster sizes of these example from somewhere to display in the classroom. I am sorry I do not remember where. We had more than one set, so the students got to practice several times.

Then discuss the the student's answers together as a class. Be sure to make some of the off topic responses very good writing examples. The students need to understand fully that even good writing will not be a passing grade because they are off topic.

Good luck, hope this idea helps.
