Re: AK students By Kat

Don't worry about it. Sounds like you are doing a great job!! I, for one, used to attend school in Barrow, AK. In fact, our students ran off 4 principals in 5 years. (Not that I'm proud of that.)Just a few friendly tips: *Don't ever refer to the *Natives* as Eskimo's or indians - they hate that. *Try to learn the lingo and culture - maybe they are Hiada or Tlingit or Athabascan or Inupiaq. Learning about their culture will help with misunderstandings and strengthen communication with students and parents. *Have a sense of humor........I don't know if this is what you were asking for. | | Politics in AK are crazy. Our Superintendent wanted the same thing - Success for all children - But that is very hard when so many have FAS and FAE. Most of our (native) male population was pushed into vo-tech. And the girls weren't pushed towards anything. The *white* kids were always pushed to go to college. Just know that you are doing the right thing and trying your hardest. Way to go for sticking in there!!!
