Have you tried "Jigsaw"?

It's very similar to what Sabrina said. Break the text up into 4 or 5 sections and assign a section to each group. The group then reads and discusses the section, noting what is most important. The groups then split up and form new groups with an "expert" for each section in each group. Each member of the new group then "teaches" that section of the text to the rest of the group.
