6th Grade
By Karen

Clip to ScrapBook
Boy, can I relate...the problem is that some girls get 'hormonal' before the rest of the students...after that occurs, school is nothing more than a place to socialize. I taught 7th grade last year and that's where this phenomenon
really picks up. The good news is that they usually calm down by the end of 8th grade -not that it'll help you any this year. I,too, have 6th grade this year and have a few 'hormone queens" in my room. What I find really helps is to pull them out and talk to them one on one. If you reprimand them in front of the class -they'll put up an attitude to be cool and save face in front
of their peers. Asking for their help in coordinating some activities helps too...most of these girls are in a place where their self-esteem is very shaky (remember middle school? I wouldn't go back for a million bucks!) and if they think that they can be a help to you they usually are much better behaved in class -but don't give an inch when it comes to breaking rules -they'll take a mile. One little darling I have has had 3 detentions already -and we've only been in school a month. Good luck!
