No, you are not expecting tooo much of 6 and 7 year olds...You cannot teach if they are not listening and if you are losing instructional time trying to get control.
I tell my first graders to give me five...they stop
whst they are doing and hold up their hand with five fingers spread. Five being, eyes looking, ears listening, mouth quiet, hands still, feet still, so they are ready to learn.
I also sing to my children, sometimes, but sometimes very seriously counting down from ten seems to help. You might also try counting slowly to three...it is funny because you don't have to tell them what you
will do it you get to three!!!LOL
You might try giving treats to the ones ( or the first five or ten) who get settled first when you are starting a lesson.
I allow a little interaction in my classroom but not to the point of chaos and when I have a student teacher I especially try to help keep them inline...although I allow her to be the main one during her instruction.
Good luck!
