haiku
By Sherrie

Clip to ScrapBook
I have actually done a few lessons on Haiku and the kids really like it! I suggest starting with the introduction to syllables because the pattern has to be
5
7
5

Encourage the kids to clap out their lines to see
if they got 17 syllables. Practice syllables. Then either that day or the next go on to write your poems. I have my students write 2 or three and then pick their favorite ones and type them. I think it's a great idea for them to write about peace, but even though it's traditional to write about nature, peace is part of nature. I am going to do Halloween poems. HAPPY HALLOWEEN is a
common first line because it has 5 syllables. If you are going to do a specific topic, I would suggest brainstorming with the students some ideas they could use in their poems. I hope it helps! Let me know how it goes!
