How about solving word problems for math using cooperative groups, word problems written with a Halloween theme, and Halloween candy for manipulatives, of course! Present the mini-lesson by reviewing problem solving strategies: read the problem, collect data, decide which operation to use, etc. Then give each student a pumpkin with a plus sign and a ghost or witch with a minus sign. Have them brainstorm clue words to add to the back of their cut out (total, sum, in all on the pumpkin, etc.) Work through a couple of problems together, then go to the meeting area to demonstrate how to work in the cooperative groups to solve the problems and even work through one there with a cooperative group. Then send the students off to solve while you facilitate. You will need to write some Halloween based word problems and match them to the candy you can purchase--fill plastic bowls with candy corn, m and ms, lollipops, etc. Have fun! If you are a bit nervous, set up and practice the day before after your students leave. Good luck, have fun!
