Hi all,
Great suggestions, I'd like to add a daily meeting such as one mentioned, with a different twist...we begin and end each day with community reflections...Celebrations, Questions and Concerns are raised, class goals
and new learning is reflected upon. We all sit in a circle on the floor (yes, the older kids can do this too!) and work our way around the circle giving each child a chance, if they'd like, to share something with the group. The only rules are that no names are mentioned and that we work toward group solutions to difficulties. We set goals in respectful behavior for the upcoming
day and decide how we're going to meet them. Today's was a difficulty with the noise level during Reader's Workshop. A celebration was that everyone had a good time on the playground-no arguments during football, and the confrontation with several friends was resolved peacefully. When the bell rings, we're still usually working our way around the circle...and everyone remains quiet to listen to the next speaker. (This didn't happen overnight!) Hope this helps. ;-D
