sarah, in your defense since you have not been met with the compassion and encouragement you deserve, i am a second year teacher in a school with LOTS of young teachers (young, but not brand new young) and it is still hard| to make friends. they are all great teachers and nice people. we eat lunch together and chat with each other briefly about weekend plans, etc. yet, i would not consider any of them true friends. they are all just a few years older and into buying houses and wedding plans and baby showers and while i am interested and chat with them about these things, i do not always feel i fit in. | | i don't think it all has to do with age or with trying....i have older friends and i do try to make new ones, i feel more of it has to do with our profession. we are the lone adult all day in a room of kids. our short amount of time at lunch with other adults is enough to be friendly but maybe not to make a new friend. this is a drastic change from college where you are surrounded by friends or from other professions where there are soooo many more adult interactions and laidback moments throughout the course of the day. hang in there, things are much better for me this year and while i still don't feel they are necessarily friends, i do enjoy my time with the other teachers.
