I always have something on the board for students to work on as soon as they get in the room. From day 1 students know that this is how the routine works. I highly recommend the book, "Tools forTeaching", by Fred Jones. I have gotten so many great ideas from him on how to maintain control over my classroom and how to get the kids to settle down and work.
