Math in Social Studies By Judy
|
| I was at a workshop recently where we were discussing how to bring other subjects into math, well this is a very similar situation. One suggestion really stayed with me. In every Social Studies class there are those boring days where you just read the textbook. Well, math can be drawn out of that so easily AND give the class some interesting activities. First of all, you could design a timeline for any topic in Social Studies. You could make graphs of any statistics that are given. You could also work with maps and geography. The math ideas there are endless--distance and time. How long did it take to cross the Atlantic then?...now? How far away from where we are did the battles of the Civil War take place? How far did the soldiers have to travel between battles? ETC! These are just some ideas...build on it!
