I have 5 centers going at once. The first center is a writing center (I teach 2nd grade so this is where they get their handwriting practice in). The second center is a practice center where they work on a worksheet that
extends the phonics lesson we had as a whole group earlier in the day. The third center is a spelling center and they do activities with their spelling words. The fourth center is a listening center. The first day they listen to the tape, the second day they might do a sequencing activity for the story or a mini book report. Sometimes I have them scan the story for whatever phonics

rule we are working on (blends, short "a" words, -ing words, etc.) The fifth group works with me in their reading book. I set a timer for 20 minutes and when it goes off, they have to clean up their center area, turn their work into the classwork basket and move to the next center. This is the first year that I have tried centers/reading groups and am really surprised at how well it works. I group them according to reading ability. I also explain what they will be doing at every center before we get started and I have activities posted that they can do at every center if they finish before the timer goes off. Hope this helps.
