you did great! You can't take this personally, you gave him many opportunities and also took the time to talk with him one on one, then you just have to let go of it, and reporting this to the parents was exactly what I would have done. we as educators provide many opportunities for students to learn, but we can't make them, goes with the old saying of leading a horse to water but can't make them drink! no, you did not over react, you acted like a caring teacher.
