My students have a spiral to write down daily assignments. Each night the parent must sign it. If they don't, then that student sits outs 5 min. from recess. If the homework in not completed, they receive a "pink slip" stapled into their spiral for them and the parent to sign and they also sit out 10 min. from recess. Also, 10 points is deducted from each late homework assignment each day it is late. I keep a reminder chart for myself of who needs to turn in pink slips each day. This has curtailed much of the problem and it keeps me from spending a lot of classtime listening to excuses. I do not reward students for doing their homework...that is an expected behavior.
