Best Read-Aloud Ever!
By JES

Clip to ScrapBook
Some of the regulars on these discussion boards can probably already predict that I am going to recommend HOLES by Louis Sachar. It is not what I would call light-hearted, but is certainly a worthwhile read. After I started
reading it to my 5th graders (and even 4th) they would hardly let me stop. When we got to the last part of the book, I read to them the whole entire reading time, and they applauded at the end. Actually, I think Louis Sachar owes me for all the times I've praised and recommended HOLES.

Another good choice could be CRASH by Jerry Spinelli. It has some very funny parts, but it

also has a great message as well.

I think the FUDGE books are a little beneath their level, but you just never know what kids will like until you try. Unless they are very unusual kids, they will certainly let you know if they think what you are reading is not "Cool!" ---- or would that be "Sweet!"?

Bu the way, I always recommend that you read the book yourself before reading it aloud in your classroom. Try CRASH and HOLES. I think both you and your students will love them.
