Punishment
By Jennifer Iyer

Clip to ScrapBook
I was taught in college to never keep kids in at recess, cause that does take away your time as well. But hey, we as teachers have little "me" time anyways in the day! I would see if the principal has a place for these kids
to sit during recess. I had a very difficult principal, but I told her my discipline policy and she was more than willing to set up a small space in the office for my students to come in at recess. She understood the consequences, and understood I needed time to regroup as well. If you have different times of recess, maybe you can ask another teacher to take them, if she's got a class.
I did that and would often take her kids while they were at recess and we were in class.
There are many things you can do other than that. When I had 4th grade, we had a system where they would lose "points" and at the end of the week, if they lost enough points, they wouldn't have the free friday afternoon. (We had 1/2 hour of outdoor play) They would have to sit out on the fun. Also, can they stay after school? I know this is hardly done anymore, but if your school does do this, try and see if you can.
Good luck!
Jennifer
