inappropriate conversations by children
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
Wow, that must have made your day interesting. I had a comment today too that raised my eyebrows, but thankfully only 3 children heard it.

I'm going to assume that his family is very open about body parts, etc., with the
fact that he used the word Vagina. I'm also guessing that he has either learned about his mother's or sister's period and they tried to explain it to him. This may have been a lesson or accidental.

I would approach it this way if he was in my class. First I would talk gently with him and tell him that although it is great he can talk to his mom and dad about his body and their bodies,

it is not something we talk about at school unless we are talking about it in class. And even then we usually do not talk about our private parts to everyone.

Then I would call his parents and let them know what had happened. See how they respond, if they have an explanation, get really defensive, etc., This might give you a clue as to if it was something more "innocent", he saw something or heard something and asked questions, or if perhaps you get a feeling something more is going on.
If everything seems on the up and up, I would ask them to talk with their son and explain that what they tell him at home is not always something to be shared at school.

4, 5, 6 year olds are quite fascinated with body parts, etc., and if they know things they will blurt them out. I know one boy last year everytime there was a story or video about baby animals his first question was but how do the dad and mom have the babies. I became good at sidestepping the question.

Usually the talking from both you and home will put a stop to most of these types of statements. You may have to remind him, and watch him carefully at recess times for the next while to make sure that he is not continuing the pattern.
