Clip to ScrapBook
My class enjoys listening to the text on tape. I too do many hands-on projects and use trade books but there are times when I think the actual "reading" of the text is necessary. When the task becomes mundane and even choral, group, etc reading isn't interesting enough, I just pop in the tape. Most of my kids love just listening and following along. They say that it is much faster (in reality it isn't) and they understand more. It also helps my low readers, especially in social studies where our text is a high level reader.

Our books came with tapes of each chapter. However, if yours don't you could even have one or two kids read for the tape prior to your lesson.
