Bubblegum
By Robin

Clip to ScrapBook
Here's what I did just before Halloween. I bought a mega bag of Double Bubble (individually wrapped). I handed out a handleful or two to each student. One at a time, I had a student join another. If they made a group of
ten, they put it to the side; one student stayed with the group of ten; the other took what remained and joined another student. It carried on until the class had made as many groups of ten as possible. Then we did the same procedure for grouping tens together to hundreds. All groups were recorded by a student in a place value chart on the board.
It was a fun activity that definitely
held their attention, with the added bonus of having a lovely-smelling room. I gave each student a handful of the gum as a treat, and they were allowed, for that day, to chew gum in school.
