I have my students use a home reading response journal. On the inside cover I paste a page with several prompts that they can use to respond to the reading. Depending on their ability, I use Bloom's Taxonomy Questions for Literature.
Basic knowledge:
What is the problem? When and where does it take place? Why does the story have the title it does?
Higher level questions:
If you had to cook a meal for the main character, what would you cook and why? What would you do if you could travel to when or where they story took place? What do you do that is like the person in the story? Which things could | |
not really happen?
Even higher:
Can you think of another title for the story? Retell the story from another point of view of a character. How else might the story have ended? What type of person might enjoy reading this book and why?
I use these journals for my higher second and third graders, but you get the idea.
