Virginia

Hi Opal,

Contact the website of the Virginia Department of Education to see about how other states' certification reciprocates to Virginia.

I live right on the I95 corridor, halway between DC and Richmond. There are
3 counties in my area that were scrambling for teachers up to the day school started on 9/4. The problem is rapidly increasing enrollments as the population grows.

The openings that I know of personally are for long-term sub jobs at my middle school. There are 3 teachers who will be out on maternity leave. One will start in Nov, one in Jan, and one in April. As of last week, the

administrators were still looking for a qualified sub.

In my county, long-term subs get paid the same daily rate as a beginning teacher, but without the benefits. But it is definitely the way to get your foot in the door. Our county is opening a new middle school in 2 years, but I'm sure there will be oodles of openings this summer, as there have been every summer for the past few years.

Others on this board have posted that the Northern Virginia area was tougher to break into. I only know that when I was interviewing 3 years ago, Loudoun County was very aggressively courting new grads. Maybe things have slowed down there since then.

I hope this helps. If you need more info, e-mail me. I'll see what I can do. Good luck...
