Since you are the student teacher, you probably will not be able to do anything drastic. Try buying some cheap tablecloths (the vinyl type would be easy to clean). Then have students push them together in groups of 3,4, etc. depending on the activity. If you keep the kids in quads, for instance, you will create more walkways and would just need to throw on the cover for the activity.
