I had a classroom fish tank for years until we were told no pets of any kind. If you do take it, put out a request for a parent and child to clean it before or after school once a month as a volunteer opportunity. I did this and didn't have to maintain it for years. One year the parent even went in during the summer. Think about summer too- I live close, so by putting in long term feeders and checking every two weeks the tamk was fine. the equipment is expensive, so you may want to take it and store it away when you are ready.
