Clip to ScrapBook
I am a 5th grade teacher (not a new one), but we departmentalized this year for the first time. I think it's horrible. Number one, there is less time to give individualized help. You cannot integrate subjects(I always thought
this was the way to teach). The kids that have trouble with orgonization really suffer. It is difficult to get students from other classes for extra help. Discipline is also difficult to maintain because they have so many teachers to be accountable too.You would think it would be the other way around, but it's not. They aren't really sure who is in charge. Trying to get the students
remediation is almost impossible, due to the schedules. If they miss a class when you have them all day, you can catch them up later. How do they get caught up when they miss someone elses class?
I agree with you, we became elementary teachers in order to have our kids all the time and to teach all subjects. We have to do detailed plans also, but I think it's worth it. I hate teaching math all day long. I feel less effective and it's very frustrating for me.
Hope some of my ideas help you. Stand firm don't do it in 4th grade. Even 5th grade is still too young.
