1. "As I think it is said"- they write the words they believe they say everyday 2. "As it is said" - here they write the actual words from the pledge 3. "The Pledge my way"- after the second step we brainstorm some of the harder words and come up with synonyms for them. Then the students re-write the pledge in their own "kid-friendly" version. They still say the pledge every morning as is, but at least they now have attached their own understanding to what it means.
