I'd put this problem back on the principal. "How would you like us to handle hallway disturbances?" or "Do we have a whole-school policy on discipline?" If not, why not? The principal needs to see the school as a whole| and have a strong vision of where it is going and how to get there. You have a right to quiet hallways, respectful students (black, white, hispanic, whatever!) and support for your efforts from your administration. Since your administrator decided to make a ruling on this situation she needs to come up with a way to ensure schoolwide discipline and respect. If she doesn't come up with | | a policy by Open House you would have every reason to announce to the assembled parents that your principal has been asked to come up with a schoolwide policy and any questions concerning discipline and respect should be directed at her. (And then duck!) About the uneven racial mix in your classrooms, is it the same in all grades? If it is, that would be a concern to bring up with your district or teacher organization because you are in dangerous waters. If the other grades seem pretty evenly mixed, you can guess that your group is a fluke. (I was going to say anomole, but I couldn't figure out how to spell it...)
