Virginia
By Dawn

Clip to ScrapBook
I am in Virginia, about 50 miles south of DC. The "Northern Virginia" school districts of Fairfax, Arlington, and Loudoun are fairly high paying and all faced teacher shortages this year. If you are experienced and qualified,
you should have no problem getting hired there. The starting pay near DC is 32K to 35K I believe; maybe more with a Masters.

Where I teach, in the Fredericksburg area, there is also a teacher shortage. The pay is slightly less, starting at 30K or 32K with masters. I know of several teachers at my school who were hired at the last minute without certification or even teacher training,

just to get someone into the teacher's desk.

Fredericksburg is a more suburban population, not nearly as diverse culturally as the Northern Virginia area is. I visited one middle school in Fairfax where more than 20 nationalities and languages were represented in the student body! A very challenging situation I think!

Virginia requires certain minimum Praxis scores for certification, but I don't know how they certify teachers moving into the state. Do visit the Virginia Dept of Education website--it has links to every county school district.

Good luck. I love it here and I'm sure you will too.
