bathroom breaks
By CC

Clip to ScrapBook
Last year I had the same problem with my fourth graders. It seemed like once one went out, there was this ripple effect. My school has changed this year from a K-4 school to a 3-6 school so I changed my bathroom policy.
Now that the little ones are no longer here (they would go to the bathroom as a class and it was frowned upon in the older grades in my school) I find it much easier to take the class down all at once. My students know not to ask during reading (which covers our first two periods) We go down once around 10 am and then after lunch. As a fairly new teacher, I feel like I get more done
and the students are more productive when they are not constantly in and out and I am sure that nobody is missing important information or instructions during class time. It only takes about 10-15 minutes for the whole class to go down to the bathrooms. If students were going one at a time it would be 5 minutes per student at least as I have some wanderers.
