Hands on SS
By Leah

Clip to ScrapBook
One of the most effective things I have done in SS in my fourth grade class is to encorporate guest speakers into the classroom. Find some senior citizens to come in and talk about life during the Depression or WWII. Get
a local buff to speak about the Revolutionary War and point out sites of interest. Your students will be engrossed with these real life "pieces" of history and will learn to prepare and research effective questions. The seniors are thrilled to be allowed to share their true stories and you will be amazed how history becomes a living thing to your students instead of words in a book.
There are thousands of follow up projects with this- class newspaper, timelines, response journals, potlucks, ethnic celebrations etc. Hope this helps. Leah- CA
