Estimation Jar
By Angie

Clip to ScrapBook
I use an estimation jar on Mondays of each week. I do the first one and a student gets to take it home on Friday and fill the jar up (plastic jar, of course) after the first week. All the students look at the jar and then write their estimate on a post-it note. After everyone is done, we map out the estimations on a number line on the board. This has them using number lines, comparing numbers, and using a picture representation. Then we talk about range, mode, mean, and median (some data skills) and then the kids ask questions: (Where do most of the estimates fall?, Do we have any outliers?, etc) We count what is in the jar and then find who was the closest. We talk about strategies for good estimating as we go.
Hope this helped!
