Clip to ScrapBook
I always have 3rd graders who come in not really ready to understand regrouping! So don't feel alone. This activity I have done with a parent 1:1 but you could do it at a center. I made a workmat with a file folder and labeled
columns: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands. Have base 10 blocks available. Write numbers to be built on 3x5 cards. Students are to take a card and build the matching number on the workmat with the base 10 blocks. Draw the corresponding blocks on the back of the card so it will be self correcting. This could be an ongoing center using increasingly larger numbers as the year goes by. You
could also do the reverse where they look at the picture of blocks and write the number. This skill takes many weeks of repeated practice. Of course, all centers go more smoothly if you can find a voluteer to oversee it. Otherwise, model it and have a student model the behavior you expect. Are you familiar with the "blockhead" activity for learning numbers to 1000? You may not be ready for that yet, but if you are interested, e-mail me
