Clip to ScrapBook
It's a hard concept for some children to grasp at first. Each year I have the same problem. I, too, have used base ten blocks, straws, and anything else I could think of. I still have a few that don't "get it". Now, before I teach the concept I tell them they all may not understand it at first, but before the year is out I guarentee they will. I ask them to follow the steps exactly as I show them, even if they don't understand, and they should come up with the correct answer. Eventually, they all get it. Just keep going over the steps with them. It's such a joy when you hear those struggling tell you "I get it".
